What is SMSTS?
SMSTS stands for the Site Management Safety Training Scheme. It is essential in equipping existing and future Site Managers, and other senior construction professionals with the knowledge of health and safety industry standards, regulations and current legislation for working on site.
Who is it for?
The SMSTS covers all relevant legislation affecting safe working in the construction and civil engineering industries, highlighting the requirement for workplace risk assessments, the necessity for implementing control measures and ensuring good communication to maintain a robust health and safety culture on site.
What will I learn?
The SMSTS training course will teach you in detail about health and safety best practices in relation to construction sites including topics such as working in confined spaces, scaffolding, working at heights, electricity, demolition, and excavations. You will learn about the regulations, risk assessments and worksite hazards and how to put all the relevant legislation regarding health and safety, welfare, and environment into practice. On completion you will be confident in recognising potential hazards on site and your responsibilities for the welfare and safety of workers on site.

- Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999
- Reporting of Injuries Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013
- Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2015
- Working at Height Regulations 2005
- Provision & Use of Work Equipment 1998
- Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
- Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
How is the course organised?
Our SMSTS training courses can be undertaken in person, we offer courses in Essex, Cambridgeshire, Sussex, and Sheffield or remotely through Zoom. It consists of five days of training, with case studies and exercises facilitated by your Trainer. There is an exam which has both multiple choice and written questions with a pass rate of 81%. This qualification is valid for five years, although we suggest taking the SMSTS Refresher after three years, ensuring that you have the most up to date information regarding health and safety on site.
